Supercavitation technology
Thursday, November 9th, 2006Interesting technology being developed for high-speed underwater transport. Supercavitation happens when a correctly shaped object exceeds ~180km/h speed underwater, breaking down the water into gaseous state and forming a bubble around the object. German defense contractors DIEHL BGT Defence have recently developed a steerable high-speed torpedo (’Barracuda’), claiming significant enhancement over the Russian Shkvall technology which has been under development since the 60’s in Ukraine.
US defence has just authorized spending under DARPA for similar technology.
