Supercavitation technology

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

Interesting technology being developed for high-speed underwater transport. Supercavitation happens when a correctly shaped object exceeds ~180km/h speed underwater, breaking down the water into gaseous state and forming a bubble around the object. More background on Wikipedia.

German defense contractors DIEHL BGT Defence have recently developed a steerable high-speed torpedo (’Barracuda’), claiming significant enhancement over the Russian Shkvall technology which has been under development since the 60’s in Ukraine.

US defence has just authorized spending under DARPA for similar technology.

Read this interesting paper by Y. Savchenko on the technology.

Fictional story Deep Angel is built around this technology concept.
